Harlem House

"HARLEM HOUSE, the oldest (1898) and most notable of Harlem’s settlements, maintains headquarters at 311 East 116th Street. In addition to Americanization services and assistance to immigrants, the institution conducts a varied program of activities for the benefit of the poor—classes in vocational and cultural subjects, clubs, games, debates, and forums—and participates in progressive municipal campaigns” (New York City Guide, p. 270).
